Previously thought of as a disease of teenagers, we now know that patients can have new or worsening cases of acne well into their 20’s, 30’s and beyond. It is also a condition with a complex set of causes and factors that contribute to its’ worsening. This condition causes a variety of inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions types, that can lead to discoloration and permanent scarring. These lesions and scars occur in areas with the highest concentration of oil glands – the face, chest, upper back, and upper arms. Without treatment, it can lead to permanent scars, feelings of poor self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.

Who Gets Acne?

Almost everyone! In fact, it is estimated that 95% of all people will experience acne problems at some point during their life. It affects both males and females, regardless of their race or ethnicity. Males tend to have more severe acne that lasts for many years, while females are more troubled by intermittent acne due to the hormonal changes associated with their menstrual cycle. This type of acne may cause problems for young women well into their 20’s and 30’s.

The condition typically begins at puberty (around age 12) with a few small whitehead or blackheads. This stage can sometimes be managed with over-the-counter products containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. For many, however, acne is more serious and by their mid-teens, more than 40% of adolescents have cases that are severe enough to warrant treatment by a dermatologist.
