Shingles

While shingles isn’t life threatening, it can be extremely painful. Let Paladin Dermatology’s experienced medical team provide treatment for your shingles.

Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox and only occurs in people who have already had chickenpox. Although the symptoms of chickenpox go away after recovery from the initial childhood infection, the virus remains dormant. If the virus becomes active, this second episode is called shingles.

This painful, blistering rash can be prevented with a vaccine that is recommended for everyone ages 60 and older. Shingles treatments usually consist of prescription antiviral drugs like acyclovir, valacyclovir or famcyclovir.

It is important to discuss the vaccination option with one of our providers during your next visit. It is estimated that 25% of all adults will get shingles during their lifetime, and this probability increases with age. Adults over 60 are more than 10 times more likely to get shingles than children under 10.
