Stuff You Won’t Find in a Dermatologists Medicine Cabinet – Expired Sunscreen

If your sunscreen expiration date was sometime during the Reagan administration, it might be time to replace it. Honestly, if you’re using it that infrequent, you’re leaving yourself exposed. The quality and efficacy of any product diminishes beyond its expiration date. For sunscreen, this is a big deal. You may be, unknowingly, over-exposing your skin to the sun’s ultraviolet rays that most often leads to premature skin aging and skin cancer. Open your cabinet and look at the date. Do you notice that odd color? What about the lumpy gunk or runny slime coming from the bottle? Throw it away and get a medical grade sunscreen. At Paladin Dermatology, we carry ELTA MD Daily or ELTA MD Clear for daily use on your face and the Elta Spray for the rest of your body. Apply a blueberry-sized drop of sunscreen to your face every morning after cleansing/shaving, and don’t forget about your ears. These sunscreens have a moisturizing base, so don’t feel like you need two different products. If you’re going out in the sun, apply your sunscreen 20 minutes beforehand, and reapply every 1-2 hours.

Stuff You Won’t Find in a Dermatologists Medicine Cabinet – Neosporin

This age-old staple has been the cornerstone of antibacterial ointments for about 50 years. It contains three different antibiotic components, but the main offender is neomycin. Neomycin is a very well-known “sensitizer”, and the more that you use it, the greater the chance that it will cause an allergic reaction. Once you become allergic to it, you always will be…sorry about that. My patients are frequently shocked to find out that they are allergic to Neosporin because they have been using it for years. But, that’s how allergies work… it sometimes takes a long time before you start to react. There are a variety of over-the-counter antibiotic ointments that are better and safer, with significantly less risk of allergic reaction. My favorite is Polysporin, but plain old bacitracin is also a very good choice.

Paladin Dermatology – A New Model of Skin Care

Welcome to Paladin Dermatology! We are so pleased that you have joined us and we look forward to meeting you in person. We welcome the opportunity to exceed your expectations for timely, efficient, and accessible dermatology services.

Dermatology is a specialty of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes and dermatologists handle everything from simple warts to complex skin diseases. We perform skin cancer screenings, evaluate and treat acute and chronic conditions, and offer advice on the best ways to protect and care for your skin.

It is estimated that over 10% of all primary care office visits are for dermatology related problems. Many of these visits are for conditions that may not be particularly serious, but cause severe pain, itching, or discomfort. This results in a lot of unnecessary visits to hospital ER’s and Urgent Care centers because of the difficulty in making a dermatology appointment. I mean, who can wait months to see a dermatologist for a case of the shingles (extremely painful) or poison ivy (extremely itchy)? You want and you need access to quality care right now!

That’s what is different about Paladin Dermatology! We offer same day dermatology appointments with minimal waiting in an environment that is warm, welcoming and professional. You want to be seen today for a cold sore? We can do that! You want to have your spouse checked for skin cancer? We can do that, too!
